Our purpose-built brand-new facility, Montessori by BrightPath Kanata Child Care Centre, offers a wide array of expertly-designed, stimulating programs for each age group.
The morning program at Kanata is based on an authentic Montessori approach. The Montessori approach to education was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900s, and it has since become the world's largest education movement. This method remains just as relevant today as it was in its inception. Its philosophy is based on the belief that a child's formative years (from birth to six) present the greatest potential for academic and social learning, and it encourages children to become independent, self-confident learners by choosing their own work. Dr. Montessori believed that treating children with respect would inspire and empower them to create a better world when they reach adulthood.
The Montessori curriculum is mastery-based and encourages each child to develop into a capable, kind, caring, and thoughtful person who is not afraid to act independently. Children use their senses to discover the world first-hand, learning and growing at their own pace, supported by trained Montessori guides. Through this approach, children develop the ability to concentrate on tasks and see them through logically, which leads to the development of reading and writing skills and an understanding of mathematics through concrete concepts. The curriculum also offers ample opportunity for exploration of the world, including animals, people, and plants. Additionally, children are free to express themselves through music, drama, and art.
The afternoon program is based on our new STEM Curriculum that complements our Montessori Program. STEM is an educational approach that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, encouraging curiosity, collaboration, and exploration. It provides children with engaging learning opportunities that promote lifelong learning.
The program is designed to include one Unit of Study each month, focused on a different topic. This enables children to explore architecture, engineering, and other relevant areas while designing and constructing topics related to the Unit of Study. They will also investigate force, motion, and gravity and use various tools to learn about technology or coding basics.
After a morning of intentional learning opportunities, the STEM activities are inclusive enrichment opportunities that vary each day. For instance, children may work together to create an exploding volcano or observe clouds after a cloud study in the afternoon. On other occasions, children may have the chance to engage in open explorations with STEM materials, such as building block challenges or playing with magnets.
We believe that integrating STEM into our Montessori Program provides our children with a comprehensive educational experience, enabling them to develop essential skills while having fun. We are excited to see how this curriculum will benefit our students, and we look forward to witnessing their growth and development. Additionally, Kanata offers recreational programs as well as a green program to further enhance the offering.
