Egg shells are great fertilizer. Show your child how to grind them with a mortar and pestle and sprinkle them in potted plants.
Montessori Pro Tip: You can use coffee beans, spices to make it even more engaging!
Math Activity
Numbers and Quantities:
Print out numbers 1-10, cut them out as cards. Use any small items you may have like shells, pebbles, buttons to count the quantities. You can do an activity with just quantity, (ask them to give you 4 shells, then 6 shells). Show them the corresponding number from the cards.
Montessori Pro Tip: Let them layout the numbers and build quantities in front
Language Activity
Story Writing:
If your child knows how to write, encourage them to write their own stories. If they need inspiration, let them cut out pictures from old magazines to use as the illustrations or draw a picture for them and let them make up a story about it.
Montessori Pro Tip: If they can’t write ask them to create an illustration and help write their story below.
Peace Activity
Materials: Any objects that make your child feel peaceful. Visiting a Montessori classroom, you may have noticed how peaceful it is, this is not by accident!
There is a big emphasis on peace in Montessori, both global peace and peace within the child. We have a peace area with little activities children can do to center themselves. Place a small music box your child can sit and play or a sand timer your child can watch in silence. This activity should not be a forced silence, just let them try their best.
Montessori Pro Tip: You can also use a small photo of nature or of your family that your child can sit and reflect on. Talk to them about how these things can help them feel calm when they have big feelings.
Creative Activity
Colour Mixing:
Fill small dropper bottles with red water, blue water, and yellow water. Let your child mix the colours in a paint palette to explore what different colour combinations make.
Montessori Pro Tip: You can use ice-cube trays if you don’t have a pallet.
