This week we will revisit the Pretzel calming strategy. Have your child their cross legs at the ankles, make an X with their arms across their chest and take three deep breaths. The deep breathing helps your child calm and manage their emotions.
Cognitive Development
Red & White Paper Chain
Cut several strips of red and white paper. Show your child how to connect paper rings together to make a paper chain. Encourage them to make the chain using an AB (red, white, red, white) pattern. Use the chain to decorate your house on Canada Day.
Language Development
Oh, Canada
Share some facts about Canada with your child. Write the word Canada on a piece of paper and identify the letters. Show them the Canada flag. Help your child make a Canadian flag. You can use a red handprint to represent the maple leaf.
Canada facts: beaver is the national animal, Canada has 2 national languages: English and French, Canada’s national sports are hockey and lacrosse, the word Canada means “village” and comes from the Huron-Iroquois word “Kanata”.
Physical Literacy
Hockey
Play hockey with your child outside. Or freeze some water in a tray and use your finger to flick a milk jug cap as a puck to play inside or out.
Creative Activity
Paper Strip Fireworks
Use dark colored paper for the background. Provide a supply of 7.5 cm x 1 cm paper strips in various colours. Show your child how to make fireworks by crisscrossing the strips of paper to form an “asterisk”. Then invite your child to glue the strips of paper onto the background paper to create their own fireworks. Accept any creation. They could add glitter, if you have some.
