Language Development

Opposites

Find a stuffed toy and sing the song, Roly Poly with your infant. Use the stuffed toy as a visual cue. Up, up, up with the stuffed toy and down, down, down. In, in, in your lap and out, out, out of your lap.

Social-Emotional Development

Calming Strategy - Deep Hugs (all ages)

Hold your child close to your chest and inhale deeply, count to 5 and exhale. Hold the hug for twenty seconds.

Physical Literacy

You Should Be Dancing

Provide your infant with a fabric scarf or party streamer for each hand. Play your favourite music and dance with your infant. Describe your actions as you dance. “We are bouncing, we are shaking and we are twirling. The music is fast, the music is slow. I hear the drums go boom, boom, boom”

Cognitive Development

In the Bag

Show a child two familiar objects such as a rattle and a block. Place both items in a bag one at a time as the child watches you. Name one of the objects and ask your child to reach into the bag and find it without looking. Expand on this by talking about the texture of the object.

Creative Activity

Painting in a Ziplock bag (all ages)

Place two different colours of paint into a large Ziploc freezer bag. Seal the bag and use packing tape to secure the opening. Lay the bag flat on a table, or tape it to a window. Encourage your infant to draw with their finger and manipulate the paint. Expand on this activity by identifying the colours created when the paints are mixed.
