If their solution is safe but slower, unusual, or slightly messy, it can still be valuable to let them try it. A child who uses six blocks when two would work is still learning. A child who builds a complicated route around an obstacle instead of moving it is still thinking. A child who changes the entire game rather than solving the original problem is still creating.

The goal is to give children opportunities to make decisions and see what happens because of those decisions.

You do not need to prepare special problem-solving activities every day. Look closely at ordinary play and you will probably notice plenty of opportunities already happening.

  • A child rebuilding something after it falls is solving a problem.
  • A child negotiating who gets which role in a pretend game is solving a problem too.
