Where Did it Go?
Use empty, lightweight plastic bottles (or blocks) as bowling pins. Approach this as a problem-solving game. “How can we make all the bottles fall?” Demonstrate rolling a ball to knock down the “bowling pins”. Count how many are knocked over. Add action words to your play. “I rolled the ball and the bottles fell over”
Physical Literacy
Chair Tunnel
Line up dining room chairs to make a tunnel that your infant can crawl under. Encourage your infant to crawl through by sitting on one side of the tunnel. If your child is not comfortable crawling underneath the chairs, consider rolling a ball underneath the tunnel, back and forth.
Social-Emotional Development
Butterfly Kisses
Show your child how to give a butterfly kiss (flutter eyelashes). Use this rhyme to match your actions.
I’ll give you a butterfly kiss on your nose.
I’ll give you one on your ear.
I’ll give you one on your knee.
Can you give a butterfly kiss to me?
Language Development
Story Time
This is a good activity for a rainy day. Find a window that your infant can look out of or pick up your infant to look out of the window together. Describe what you see. “I see the bus driving by” “There is a bird sitting in the tree” “It’s raining today, the ground is wet” If your child can participate, ask your child to gesture to what they see. “Do you see the tree? Show me where it is?” “Do you see my blue car?”
Creative Activity
Paper Collage Using Edible Glue
Do you need some glue for creative activities? Here is an easy recipe that is safe for your infant to use. Add the ingredients together and encourage your infant to stir them.
Make Edible Glue:
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 to 1/2 cup warm water
Stir mixture quickly and often. Add water as the paste thickens. Use fingers or a paintbrush to distribute the edible glue recipe.
Provide paper and smaller pieces of paper for your infant to make a collage.
