Explore one BrightPath Educator's inspiring journey through the Busy Bees Talent Exchange Program, uniting global educators to share insights and foster early childhood excellence.

When Laile Esguerra, Centre Director at BrightPath Academy Leaside, reflects on her career as an Early Childhood Educator, she describes it as a journey marked by growth, passion, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in young lives. This year, her dedication led her to an extraordinary opportunity: representing Busy Bees North America, of which BrightPath is a part, in the Busy Bees Talent Exchange Program (TEP) Asia 2024. Her experience, spanning three countries and a wealth of shared expertise, became a transformative chapter in her professional story.

Finding a Path in Early Childhood Education

Laile's journey began in the Philippines, where her love for learning and admiration for her teachers planted the seed for her future career. "Fresh out of high school, I needed to decide on a career path," she recalls. "Working with young children felt like a natural fit because of the fond memories I had growing up. It became clear to me that this was my calling,” she says.

Laile's aspirations led her to Seneca College, where she pursued Early Childhood Education, gaining invaluable hands-on experience with children ranging from infants to school age. This education became the foundation of her passion for fostering learning and growth in young children.

After years of working as a preschool educator at BrightPath Academy, which operates under the Busy Bees North America umbrella, Laile's career progressed rapidly. She took on the role of Program Supervisor and, in late 2022, became the Centre Director of BrightPath Academy Leaside. Throughout her journey, she's embraced both challenges and opportunities for personal and professional development that helped shape her into a leader. “Every step of the way, there were learning curves and opportunities for development,” she reflects. “But the most rewarding part has always been seeing children’s excitement as they learn and master new skills.”

For Laile, the job goes beyond teaching. It’s about inspiring others. “I love mentoring educators and building lasting connections with families,” she says. Her approach embodies a philosophy that early childhood education is, at its heart, a people-centered field.

Answering the Call of the Talent Exchange Program

When the Talent Exchange Program was announced, Laile's curiosity was piqued. The opportunity to visit Singapore, Vietnam, and Malaysia over 18 days while collaborating with educators worldwide felt like a dream. "When I found out I was selected, I couldn't believe it," she says. "It was a chance to step out of my comfort zone and immerse myself in new cultures and practices."

The North American team's meticulous planning and support eased any initial anxieties. From travel arrangements to program coordination, every detail was handled with care. This attention to detail set the tone for what would be an enriching and seamless experience.

Exploring Singapore: A Hub of Learning and Connection

The journey began in Singapore, where Laile joined 41 delegates from across the globe. Representing countries including Australia, the UK, New Zealand, and Ireland, these professionals brought diverse insights into early childhood education. Over 10 days, the program centered on universal themes: Music & Movement, Talent Development, Inclusive Education, Mental Health, and Environmental Stewardship.

"The Learning Vision Changi Airport centre welcomed us with open arms," Laile recounts. "Sharing experiences with their team and participating in cultural activities like visiting the Serangoon Cultural District for Deepavali made it unforgettable." The bonds formed over shared meals and laughter created a sense of community that transcended borders.

Vietnam: Bridging Language and Learning

Next, the delegates traveled to Vietnam, the newest addition to the Busy Bees Asia network. Although the visit was brief, it offered profound insights into the unique challenges and opportunities in the region. Language differences added a layer of complexity, but the shared commitment to education bridged the gap.

"Celebrating ECE and Childcare Worker Appreciation Day with my hosts on October 18, the same day they were celebrating back home, was a highlight," Laile says. "It reminded me of the universal respect and gratitude for educators everywhere."

Wrapping Up in Malaysia: Collaboration and Reflection

The final stop was Malaysia, where the delegates collaborated on projects addressing global challenges in early childhood education. "We combined our observations and suggestions into presentations that showcased the universal goal of providing the best start in life for every child," Laile explains.

The experience underscored commonalities across regions: the dedication to positive, supportive environments and the recognition of educators as the heart of early childhood programs.

A Full-Circle Moment

For Laile, the Talent Exchange Program was more than a professional milestone—it was deeply personal. "Being born in the Philippines, returning to Southeast Asia as an educator was a full-circle moment," she reflects. "It's my hope that sharing this experience will inspire others to keep their passion for educating young children alive."

Laile's story is a testament to the power of connection, collaboration, and the universal drive to nurture the next generation. Her journey exemplifies the transformative impact of programs like the Busy Bees Talent Exchange Program, fostering not only professional growth but also a profound sense of belonging within the global early childhood education community. None of this would have been possible without the support and vision of BrightPath and Busy Bees North America, whose commitment to empowering educators makes programs like TEP a reality.
