Rhyming Puzzle
Purpose: Identifying and making rhymes is an important part of phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is a set of skills that demonstrates understanding of the sounds and parts of words. This is an early predictor of reading success or struggles.
How to Play: Cut out the puzzle pieces and have your child correctly match up the pairs that rhyme. The words are not written on the pictures, but the word list is provided below if you aren’t certain what the word is for a given picture.
Different Strategies:
If this is a new skill for your child, tell them “Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the end”. Give a few examples for your child to hear. Try breaking up the word as well to emphasize the ending sound. For example, “D---og, L---og. They both end with -og”. Pick a word and give your child two options to choose from to match the rhyme. For example, start with ‘Cat’. Ask your child “Which one rhymes with ‘cat’… ‘sock’ or ‘hat’?”.
