Discuss the sounds that different types of transportation make (clickety-clack, whistle blowing, vroom, etc.). Tell your child that words that sound like the sound they are describing are called onomatopoeia.Enjoy the action rhyme “I’m a Choo-Choo Train” with your child.

Social-Emotional Development

Calming Strategy

Intentional breathing strategies bring oxygen to the brain to help your child focus and remain calm. Here is a fun way to help your child focus on their emotional well-being – this calming strategy is called S.T.A.R. breathing.
S–smile  
T– take a deep breath

R– relax

Physical Literacy

Take your paper airplane outside. Set up a target (hula hoop, box, bin, etc.). Have your child throw their airplane toward the target. With more than one paper airplane you could get involved in the end.

Cognitive Development

Foil Boats:

Have your child create a boat out of foil. Test to see if it floats and make adjustments, if needed. Once it floats, see how many nickels (or other small items) it will hold before linking.
Challenge: Try a new design to see if it can hold more or less nickels.

Creative Activity

Building a Bridge

• Create train tracks using strips of paper. Draw straight lines on a piece of paper about 1.5 cm apart. Have your child cut the strips, if they can. Encourage your child to glue the strips onto a piece of paper to resemble a train track. Your child could also create a train out of paper shapes (rectangles, squares, circles).
• Sensory Activity: Prepare a bin of soapy water to have a car wash. Use a toothbrush or small sponge for washing toy cars.
