Shapes can be used as a visual to support children in taking time to step back from a stressful, overwhelming situation and just breathe. Use the image of the triangle with your child to take a breather and relax. A clear mind can accomplish many things and regulate all the overwhelming feelings children may encounter. To further extend this, you can even have your child trace the triangle as they take their breaths. Repeat 3 times.
Counting is a great way for children to learn numbers and math, however, counting is not the only thing a child requires to learn and develop a genuine understanding of numbers. One to one correspondence is an important math skill to sharpen. Try this activity with your child at home to further develop their math skills!
Here are the materials you will need:
• Pompoms
• Tongs
• Construction paper
• Tape
Method:
• Using the brown construction paper, cut out 10 triangles and write the numbers 1-10 on each triangle. Tape the triangles onto the table or floor for stability.
• Provide your child with various coloured pom poms and tongs
• Support your child to put the appropriate number of pompoms on each of the cones.
*Bonus activity – have your child create a pattern with their pompoms
Help develop your child’s language and vocabulary by playing this mysterious game with them!
Find an old box, or a solid container you cannot see through. Cut a hole – make sure they cannot peak through it! Place some ‘mysterious’ items in the box and ask your child to describe what they feel, what it could be, the weight of the item, and what colour it could be. Get them to be as descriptive as possible and introduce new vocabulary as well!
Here are some items you can place inside the box:
Get expressive and dance it out with ribbons to get moving with your child!
All you need are shower rings and ribbons of various colours.
Method:
Tie as many ribbons as you and your child would like on each shower ring. Turn on their favorite tunes and begin to dance it out while creating movements with various parts of the body (arms, legs, head, torso).
